9 Bays, 36 Beaches: Where Do You Start?
Huatulco is famous for its 9 Bahías (Bays), but unless you have a boat and a month of free time, you won't see them all. The reality is that most visitors stick to 4 or 5 key spots.
Here is the "Cheat Sheet" to finding your perfect beach day.
For Snorkeling: Bahía San Agustín 🤿
This is the furthest bay (about 45 mins by car/taxi), but it is worth the trek.
- Why: It has the largest coral reef system in the area.
- The Vibe: Rustic, laid back, with palapas right on the sand serving fresh seafood.
- Tip: It’s a long, bumpy dirt road to get there. Negotiate a return trip with your taxi driver or rent a car.
For Easy Swimming: Bahía Santa Cruz 🏊
Located right in the marina area.
- Why: The water is basically a swimming pool—zero waves, crystal clear.
- The Vibe: Busy family atmosphere.
- Tip: Great for kids and seniors. You can also catch a boat here to go to the more secluded beaches (like La India).
For Beach Clubs: Bahía Chahue 🍸
Note: Not for swimming!
- Why: High-end beach clubs like Sea Soul.
- The Vibe: Drinking wine by an infinity pool while looking at the ocean.
- Safety: Do not swim in the deep water here; the undercurrent is very dangerous. Stick to the pools or knee-deep splashes.
For Seafood & Calm: Bahía Maguey 🐟
Accessible by taxi (15 mins from town).
- Why: calm, emerald-green water perfect for floating.
- The Vibe: lined with seafood restaurants that will fight for your business (literally—waiters will wave menus at you).
- Tip: Walk to the far ends of the beach for a quieter spot away from the "restaurant noise."
The "Secret" Gem: Bahía Cacaluta 🌴
This is the beach from the movie Y Tu Mamá También.
- Why: It is protected, untouched, and has zero hotels or restaurants.
- How to get there: You must hike (~25 mins through the jungle) or take a boat.
- Warning: Bring your own water and shade. There are no services here. It is just you and nature.
Summary
- Snorkeling: San Agustín
- Family/Kids: Santa Cruz or La Entrega
- Poolside Luxury: Chahue

Pack your sunscreen (biodegradable please, to safe the coral!) and go explore.
